City Day in the news: Our JK-8 model

Our model allows students to transition into entirely new environments for high school just when they are developmentally ready for such a change.

Chicago City Day School is a JK-through-grade-8 school because its leaders, past and present, believe that it's the best model for discovery and growth in students. 

Chicago Parent magazine spoke to our head of school, Chris Dow, about the unique design and benefits of our JK-through-8 program.

It starts with a play-based approach in junior kindergarten and senior kindergarten that unlocks students' curiosity and makes them love learning. Then, the mid-elementary years provide increasingly sophisticated challenges and the support needed to meet them. In the older grades, our students have the chance to act as true leaders and mentors on campus.

Finally, our model allows students to transition into entirely new environments for high school just when they are developmentally ready for such a change. Each year, City Day students move on to different kinds of high schools — public, private, parochial, even boarding schools. The process of stepping into new experiences helps our students become even more confident and resilient, Mr. Dow said.
