Foreign Language

All City Day students begin learning a foreign language in junior kindergarten. Upon entry into the School, parents choose either French or Spanish for their children. In all grades, classes meet four times a week. The highest priority is placed on developing proficiency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

Students regularly communicate with their peers in French-speaking and Spanish-speaking countries. Sixth graders participate in week-long immersion experiences outside of the United States. Students studying French travel to Quebec; those studying Spanish visit Costa Rica.

The School participates in the National French Contest and the National Spanish Examination each year. City Day enjoys an outstanding reputation for success in these competitions; students routinely achieve in the upper echelons of competing schools.
